BOAT CONSTRUCTION
Moana is a traditional Pinisi Schooner - the classical beauty of the wooden sailing boat combines traditional atmosphere with all modern conveniences and safety features. The most impressive fleet of wooden sailing vessels are the so-called Bugis prahus of Indonesia, commonly known as Pinisi Schooner.
These antique looking sailing boats have been built for centuries on isolated beaches by local people working from an oral tradition without any drawings or plans, according to some sources since prior to the 1500's.
Ironwood - is preferred for boat structures. Obtained from the low land forests of Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Irian Jaya, Ironwood is locally called "Kayu Besi". Ironwood has a specific gravity of 0.88 to 1.19...! Although quite heavy, it has excellent physical properties and is not vulnerable to termites or other tropical wood eating insects or fungus.

Ceremonies
Historically, several interesting rituals and ceremonies have been part of building such a vessel, beginning with choosing the right trees for critical parts of the structure. Just as with traditional wooden boat building in the West, various rituals continue throughout the building process to initiate and celebrate each stage, such as the all important laying of the keel.
